Doha to host Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy from March 3-4

The Qatar Rugby Federation together with its partners Aspire Zone and Coffee Brewer will host the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy at the Aspire Rugby Pitch from March 3-4.

The competition, which is an annual series of regional seven’s tournaments, will feature 11 teams with Lebanon pulling out of the event citing financial constraints.

The seeded teams are divided on the basis of their Asia Rugby Sevens Series Rankings while Group C will only have UAE and India and hence they will play each other twice at the group stages.

“The sport has seen a rise in Qatar. I appreciate the works done by the QRF in the last two years to develop the sport. I thank Mr Yousef Al Kuwari for his dedicated leadership. I wish the tournament a big success,” said Asia Rugby’s Secretary General Qais Abdulla Dhalai.

The competition will have Cup, Plate and Bowls finals, with the winners promoted to the Asia Rugby Sevens Series and also have a chance to qualify for the World Rugby Sevens Cup in San Francisco, USA, next year.

“It’s a proud moment for QRF to host the prestigious event. I thank the Asia Rugby for reposing their faith in us. I’m confident we’ll have a successful tournament,” said QRF President Yousef Al Kuwari.

QRF Director of Affairs Omran Al Sherawi also hoped that the competition will help the sport make inroads.

“The tournament will boost the sport’s future in the country as well as in the region. Rugby is very popular in Europe and other parts of the world including Asia. We want to create that same atmosphere by hosting such international events,” said Al Sherawi.

Matches are scheduled to start at 1.15pm.
